As part of the RTYDS 18-Month Residency, RTYDS directors and artists from their host theatres went to Berlin to visit theatres including the Schaubühne, Maxim Gorki Theatre and the Deutsches Theater to see some work and meet artists and theatre makers.

Three new director residencies announced for 2016-17
Julia Thomas, Lekan Lawal and Ben Occhipinti have been awarded a paid residency to enable them to spend eighteen months based in a regional theatre as part of the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme 2016-2017. Funded by Arts Council England, this residency provides the opportunity for the directors to mount their own production as part of each theatre’s programme – the productions are yet to be announced. In addition, the residency will allow the directors to develop their understanding of the artistic and operational workings of a theatre as potential artistic directors and to assist on its productions.
Joe Mellor: My 3-month placement at Liverpool Everyman
Since receiving the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme placement at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, it’s been a whirlwind of enlightenment – both in terms of developing directing techniques, but so too on how the full theatre environment runs on a daily basis.
