Devised Work

Kirsty Housley is a theatre maker with a focus on collaborative and devised work. This session will focus on the role of director in a devised making process.

• How do you start when you’re starting from nothing?
• What practical exercises can you use to ensure that your ideas flourish?
• How do you create work from an idea not a story?
• And how do you carve out the space to create this work in an industry that expects a different process/timeline?

This session is aimed at directors, theatremakers and designers of all levels wishing to deepen and expand their practice.

Kirsty Housley is a director, writer and dramaturg.

Work includes The Tao of Glass at The Royal Exchange for Manchester International Festival (co-director with Phelim McDermott), Rich Kids: A History of Shopping Malls in Tehran at The Traverse, Edinburgh (co-creator with Javaad Alipoor); Avalanche: A Love Story at Sydney Theatre (Dramaturg), I’m a Phoenix, Bitch (co-director with Bryony Kimmings) and Mephisto (Rhapsodie) at The Gate. The Encounter for Complicite (co-director with Simon McBurney), Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales at the Unicorn; Misty at The Bush and in the West End (dramaturg),  and The Believers are but Brothers at the Bush.

She won The Stage award for Innovation in 2017 for The Encounter and was nominated again in 2018 for The Believers are but Brothers.

 

RTYDS is currently curating the Young Vic Directors Programme. You don’t need to be a member of the Genesis Network to take part in this session, but you do need to be a professional director, designer or producer and not in full time education.
