We are pleased to announce four RTYDS Three-Month Placements that will take place in 2022-23, in which early career directors and theatre makers will gain invaluable experience, spending focused time within a theatre company and developing their skills.
Four projects will be delivered by partners Prime Theatre, Paines Plough, ThickSkin Theatre and Tobacco Factory Theatres.
Morgan Thomas will assist Prime Theatre on a professional tour of Windrush by Paula B.Stanic, a show for young audiences, as well as a large-scale youth theatre production that is yet to be announced.
Coventry-based Joelle Ikwa will be assisting on three new plays by critically-acclaimed writers at Roundabout – Paines Plough’s state-of-the-art portable theatre – which will tour around the country later this year.
Xahnaa Adlam will be assisting on two main house productions at Tobacco Factory Theatres, including an exciting piece of new writing directed by their Associate Director Jay Zorenti-Nakhid, who himself is an RTYDS alumnus.
ThickSkin Theatre will be recruiting for their Three-Month Placement director in a role that will involve shadowing and supporting ThickSkin’s Artistic Director, Neil Bettles, across a range of exciting projects that will tour around northern venues. Find out how to apply on their website.
RTYDS Artistic Director, Sue Emmas says:
“It’s really vital to give opportunities for directors to learn by being part of a creative process and also seeing how an organisation works. Each Three-Month Placement is bespoke, and these three companies have really thought about how they can provide an exceptional opportunity for artists to expand their skills and experience. In these projects, the directors will shift their creative knowledge, build networks, and sustain their development.”
These placements provide a progression route towards creative leadership for directors and theatre makers from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in theatre. They create much-needed opportunities for early career directors and theatre makers to get in rehearsal rooms, to be part of the process of making work, and to learn from more experienced artists.
These four RTYDS Three-Month Placements are part of a number of opportunities available for 2022-23 and there will be more placements available in the Autumn for theatre companies to apply for.
